Truck shoppers have been waiting on this one for a while. The 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full redesign, bringing two brand-new Small Block V8 engines, a reworked cabin, and hands-free highway driving across most of the lineup. The first trucks are headed to GMC dealerships before the year is out.
Our team at Ray Skillman Northeast GMC has been selling and servicing these trucks since the 1980s, so we have a good read on what drivers near New Palestine, Indiana, need from a half-ton. Whether that means a trailer on US 52 or a bed full of gravel on Saturday, here is what the new Sierra brings.
The big story is the Small Block returning in 5.7L and 6.6L sizes. The 5.7L V8 makes 402 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, and when properly equipped, it can tow up to 13,500 pounds and carry up to 2,140 pounds of payload. That covers a loaded equipment trailer or a camper without leaving the half-ton class. The 6.6L V8 is the muscle pick at 481 horsepower and 501 lb-ft, which GMC calls the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in the segment. It leans toward easy acceleration rather than maximum trailer weight, at 9,400 pounds towing and 1,450 pounds of payload.
The enhanced 2.7L TurboMax is no longer the budget compromise. It now makes 350 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, tows up to 9,400 pounds, and carries the highest payload rating in the lineup at 2,310 pounds. Drivers racking up interstate miles should look at the Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel, which continues with 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft, a 12,100-pound maximum tow rating, and an available 34-gallon tank that GMC estimates stretches highway range past 900 miles. Every engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic, and towing numbers vary by cab, bed, drivetrain, and packages.
Denali Ultimate sets the ceiling with more than 60 inches of combined digital display space, the most in its class. That includes a 16.3-inch infotainment screen that articulates to reveal hidden storage behind it, an 11.5-inch passenger screen, a 12.2-inch driver information center, a 15-inch head-up display, and an 8.5-inch rear camera mirror when the bed is loaded past the glass.
Every trim gets a redesigned interior with its own colorway. The new MultiPro center console folds out into a work surface with storage underneath, which earns its keep when the truck doubles as an office. Real wood accents are available, and GMC claims best-in-class standard front head and leg room in crew cab models.
Four driver assistance features are new and standard across the lineup: Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, Side Bicyclist Alert, and Reverse Automatic Braking. Those join adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert, blind zone steering assist, rear cross traffic braking, park assist, and IntelliBeam headlamps. None of it replaces paying attention, but the extra set of eyes helps in a crowded lot.
Super Cruise handles hands-free driving on more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads, and on Denali Ultimate, that extends to towing. Anyone who has crawled through a construction backup on I-70 knows how much easier a long haul gets when the truck holds its own lane.
Order books are open. If you are weighing the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 against a current-generation Sierra already on our lot, we are glad to walk you through both in person.
Six trims carry the lineup. GMC has not yet published the full standard and optional breakdown for Pro, Elevation, AT4, and Denali, and pricing has not been announced. Here is what is confirmed so far.
| Trim | Super Cruise | Interior Colorway | Confirmed Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | Not listed | Not yet detailed | Work-focused base trim, shown in Coastal Dune |
| Elevation | Available | After Dark | Blacked-out styling, shown in Onyx Black |
| AT4 | Standard | Forest Storm with Alpine Lake accents | Off-road trim below AT4X, shown in Summit White |
| AT4X | Standard | Timber Mahogany with Bright White accents | 35-inch mud-terrain tires, front and rear e-lockers, 2-inch lift, panoramic sunroof |

| Denali Ultimate | Standard, with trailering | Stealth Black with Bright White accents | Standard 6.6L V8, 60-plus inches of displays, 16-speaker Bose, forged wood trim |
AT4X is the serious off-road build, running 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud-terrain tires, Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials, and a 2-inch suspension lift. An AEV Edition package adds heavier armor and beadlock-capable wheels.

Up to 13,500 pounds when properly equipped with the new 5.7L V8. The Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel follows at 12,100 pounds, and both the TurboMax 2.7L and the 6.6L V8 are rated at 9,400 pounds. Real capacity depends on cab, bed, drivetrain, and the packages you add, so bring us your trailer weight, and we will match it to a build.
Four. GMC pairs an enhanced 2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder, a 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel, an all-new 5.7L Small Block V8, and an all-new 6.6L Small Block V8 with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The 6.6L V8 makes 481 horsepower and comes standard on Denali Ultimate.
Super Cruise is standard on AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate, and it is available on Elevation. Denali Ultimate goes a step further with trailering capability, so the system stays active with a trailer hooked up. A three-year plan is included on that trim, after which an OnStar Super Cruise plan must be purchased.
